    • Dress code

Planning a trip to Istanbul? Before booking, it’s important to understand key cultural and practical tips to make your visit smooth and respectful. Dress modestly, especially when visiting mosques—cover your shoulders, chest, arms, and legs, and women should carry a scarf to cover their hair. Public displays of affection like hugging and kissing are frowned upon in many areas, though friendly gestures like men holding hands are common locally. Always remove your shoes when entering a private home, as a sign of respect and cleanliness. Use only licensed taxis—look for official markings, use apps like BiTaksi, or ask your hotel for help—and beware of drivers who avoid using meters. Many Turkish drivers do not yield to pedestrians, so make eye contact before crossing. Keep your valuables hidden in busy areas and avoid restaurants without a visible menu or where waiters push dishes without listing prices. Tipping around 10% in restaurants is customary unless a service fee is already included; always tip in cash. Don’t discuss politics or attempt to take antiquities out of the country—ask for certification when buying carpets or vintage items. Expect to spend around $50 per day (about $20 for lunch and $30 for dinner). Turkish cuisine is rich and diverse—try dishes like baklava, Turkish delight (lokum), testi kebab (a clay pot meat stew), honey chicken, and Bosphorus bluefish (lüfer). For drinks, sample ayran (a salty yogurt beverage), rakı (anise-flavored spirit), Efes beer, and traditional Turkish coffee, which comes sweetened to your taste. Top areas for dining include Sultanahmet Square (historic and lively), Galata Bridge (great for fresh fish with views), and Taksim–İstiklal Street (affordable, local options). Highly recommended restaurants include Enjoyer in Sultanahmet and Gani Gani in Beyoğlu, both known for great service and local charm.
